There is no denying the fact that residency and citizenship within the Eurozone is highly desirable and sought after due to the economic strength, political stability, desirable climate and educational and career opportunities available to the inhabitants.

Since October 2012 the Portuguese Government made this aspiration more attainable when it announced updates to its Immigration Law which enabled non-EU residents to seek a valid 5-year residency permit in Portugal known as the Portugal Golden Visa Scheme which allows its holders to work, live and travel visa free in Schengen countries through thisPortugal residency by investment programme.

Once an investor purchases real estate in Portugal worth €500,000 or more they are granted a temporary one-year golden visa which is renewed twice for 2-year periods, meaning the combined time for this visa is 5 years. After this 5 years, investors can apply for permanent residency. After 6 years, the individual will be eligible to apply for Portuguese Citizenship and Portuguese passport.

The Portugal residence programis obtainable even if your primary residence isin another country. There are only some basic requirements for Investors as part of this process. A 7 day stay in Portugal must be fulfilled during the first year and 15 days stay during each subsequent period of two years.

One big advantage of this Portugal Golden Residence Permitis that residency is also extended to your family members including your spouse and children under 18 (and children over 18if they are still in full time education) and even the parents of the main applicant. In addition to this the Portugal residency program allows you:
